ADOPT A SHELF:We are seeking volunteers to help out at the library by maintaining and shelf-reading a row in the stacks. After training and an initial shelf-reading, whenever you come to the library, you could check your row and fix anything that was out of place.
BOOK DROPS: One for print and one for audio-visual materials. Be sure to flip deposited materials into the boxes; do not leave them on the lid. The book drops are located by the main entrance.
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE: Our annual appeal during the holidays. Donors are acknowledged with a gift plate as they provide new materials for the collection.
CELL PHONES: Out of respect for our patrons and staff, please refrain from cell phone use while in the library. If you feel your call is urgent, benches are available in the vestibule.
CONFIDENTIALITY: Your account information and borrowing habits are protected by RI General Law 11-18-32 and 38-2-2.
CO-OP: The library is a co-op; taxpayers and donors provide the funding for the library to collect, organize, disseminate and preserve materials, which are used multiple times by the citizens who funded their purchase.

DISPLAY CASE: The library has a secure, lighted display case. Do you have an exhibit or collection that you would share with the community for a month or six weeks? Please contact the circulation desk for arrangements.
DONATIONS: Contact the library if you would like to donate books or other material. Please do not leave donations outside the library or in the book drop. The library has a strict donation policy and accepts only certain types of material.
ELECTRONIC SHELVING: Installed in 2001 and funded through a grant from the Champlin Foundation, these Space Saver units have doubled our storage capacity.
E- ZONE: Free digital downloads of audio-books, music, e books are available.
FAX SERVICE: Available at $1.00 for 1st page, $.25 for each additional page
GREEN: The Library is the ultimate recycling machine. The stone section of our facility was part of the Western Mills. As a cooperative, we share our materials with the community for multiple uses. We recycle as part of the North Smithfield Green Business program. And book sales recycle books and other materials yet again.
HANDICAP ACCESSIBILITY: The library is handicap accessible.

HOLDS: You can place requests for materials from this library or other Rhode Island public libraries from the “OSL catalog” tab at the top left of the web page.
MAPS: There is a historic framed map of North Smithfield hanging on the south wall, circa 1875. We also have the 1870 Edition of D.G. Beers & Company Atlas of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
MEETING ROOM: Can be booked by non-profit groups. See the “Facilities Use Policy” under the “About Us” tab for details.
NEWSPAPERS: The Library subscribes to Woonsocket Call, Providence Journal, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Back issues are retained for three months. Valley Breeze is also available on-line.
OSL (Ocean State Libraries): the statewide public library network. Providing an on-line catalog displaying holdings of all Rhode Island Public Libraries. North Smithfield Library has been a member since 1991.
OUT-OF-STATE BORROWERS: You may obtain a card for this library alone for an annual charge of $83.88 or $115.00 for an OSL card which allows you to place holds on materials belonging to other libraries.
PARK: Behind the North Smithfield Public Library is located Centennial Park, also named Eagle Point by local Scouts, which features an island, waterwheel, canal, falls, and the Branch River. Picnic tables and seating are available. The park is open dawn to dusk.
PHOTOCOPY: We offer copy services to the public. Self-serve or with staff assistance – copies are 10 cents per page for black and white and $1.00 per page for color. Larger sizes also available at increased prices.
PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS: Portable DVD players are available to adult card holders for home or travel. The loan period is one week.
SELF-CHECK: Patrons may check out their own print materials on the self-check machine.
SUMMER HOURS: The library is closed on Saturdays; all other days remain the same.
TAX FORMS: The library has IRS tax forms. State forms are only available on-line. Photocopies are 10 cents per page.

VOLUNTEERS: The Library offers volunteers opportunities for long and short- term assignments. One of our volunteers has served the community since 1984, another since 1991. Please speak with the staff for details.
Wi-Fi: the library has free unsecured Wi-Fi access available 24/7.
YEARBOOKS: We have a collection of North Smithfield High School yearbooks that have been donated to the library. The following years are available: 1968 & 1969, 1972 through 1979, 1980 through 1987, 1990 through 1992 and 1994 through 1997.
