Preschool Children Storyhour Behavior: Helpful Hints

Preschool storyhours meet for six-week sessions, excluding school holidays and vacation periods. Because of limited enrollment and the dynamics of the group, pre-registration and a commitment to attend regularly is required. North Smithfield residents are given first priority in registration, but youngsters from other communities may participate if space is available.

During storyhour children will listen to stories, do a craft, play games and sing songs. Because the children sit on the floor and frequently use markers, glue and paints, casual (and in the winter, warm) clothing is suggested.

1. HANDLE NECESSITIES BEFORE STORY HOUR
Bathroom and coats

2. PARENTS
Remain in the library in case your child needs you.
Parents in the 2 1/2 year old group are asked to stay with your child to assist with their curiosity and comfort level. Younger siblings are welcome, but remember that the program is designed from the enrolled preschooler.

3. LIBRARY BEHAVIOR
Parents are reminded that the library is open and operating during storyhour. The primary area has good sound control, but activities should not disturb other patrons.
Parents are responsible for their child’s behavior while in the library. Children should respect the furniture and furnishings. No running, no rough-housing. Puppets and puzzles are to be picked up before leaving.

4. TAKE BOOKS HOME
Plan on choosing books and materials with your child to carry the program home. We also have a fine selection of magazines, audio cassettes, read-along book & tape kits, and videos.

5. READINESS
